Is there something special I'm supposed to get Karkat for Christmas? Or am I supposed to treat it like just another gift giving holiday? And if you know him well enough, what kind of Pokemon do you think he would like that he doesn't already have.

Rock music! Right, rock music. If he likes rock it'd be best to figure out what bands or songs he likes best and do some scouting around for bands and songs like those. Then, you could buy him some tracks for the gear. But, you'd wanna get him something else to go with it that'd show him he, like, really means a lot to you.
