Personality:

The first word that comes to mind when describing Vanitas is troll. In all seriousness, I'm starting with troll. He's a jerk, a schoolyard bully, a downright mean person, and he is made of pure Darkness. Which in Kingdom Hearts terms, usually means baddy bad bad, and Vanitas is definitely an antagonist. Giving off a cold, harsh vibe, he is one of the cruelest characters that the series has to offer, ranking just behind Ansem (Seeker of Darkness version, aka, Xehanort's Heartless) and Xehanort himself.

Vanitas keeps a pretty level headed look about himself, and he can be patient and is very intelligent. It's noticeable with the way he speaks. He doesn't necessarily use large words, but they are calculated, showing that he can be cunning and thinking on the fly is no problem for him. Vanitas is also incredibly determined, and a bit stubborn when he wants to get something done. He won't let his patience run out when it comes to this, though he will start to get irritable if it takes a bit too long. Along with those surprisingly positive and good traits, the bad outweighs it by a landslide. Vanitas is cruel, proud, arrogant, ruthless, selfish, downright mean and can be considered purely evil. Those good traits and these bad ones make up a nasty combination when put together. There is almost absolutely no good in him, because well, he has no light in his fragment called a heart. Pure Darkness and all.

Along with all of those terrible traits that make him the secondary antagonist for Birth by Sleep, there are also the circumstances of his 'birth', per say. Vanitas was created from the darkness in Ven's heart, separated by Xehanort. Ven is carrying only a portion of his own heart, while Vanitas carries the other half; all of the pure Darkness that Ven originally had.

Thus, Ventus is a very important figure to Vanitas, though it isn't for any sentimental reasons. Ven is his ticket to the X-blade. Ven is also his literal other half. If Ven were to die, there goes half of his heart and a large portion of his reason to exist. There is also that Ventus would have rather died rather than give in to his darkness; give in to Vanitas. In a way, he is still insulted by this old old detail that surrounded his birth.

There is a very rare, very brief instance where Vanitas genuinely looks fearful and concerned, and it's after Ventus has defeated him for the last time and Vanitas knows he is going to die; to lose, and to cease to exist as he has for the last three years.

Strengths/Weaknesses:

Strengths:
+ He trained his entire existence to eventually create the X-Blade, so he is physically very tough. He may not have his abilities with darkness here and handy, but he can still kick some serious ass and hurt people badly.
+ Cool, calm, collected, dark and mysterious. He has a sort of charisma that can make a person curious, but his harsh attitude is what will really keep people away in the end. Is this even a strength fffff
+ Vanitas is a quick thinker and he is super quick on his feet. He's not much of a marathon runner, but he can dart and cartwheel his way to victory dodge and flip when necessary. Aerodynamic, you could say.
+ He is good at manipulating people with words; he doesn't always have to physically beat the tar out of someone to make them do what he wants.

Weaknesses:
- What are social skills? Vanitas doesn't believe in relationships with people, and friendship is nothing but a waste of time to him. So uh, good luck trying to be his friend, he'll throw it back in your face with disgust.
- What is this thing called not being a creeper? This mostly pertains to Ventus and anyone Ventus considers a friend. If Vanitas learns about it, he will try and use them to get to Ven on all occasions to try and get his X-Blade.
- Due to where he is coming in canon, he will basically have lost his purpose. He was to make the X-Blade and failed, and when he attempts to do it again here, well. Crazy merging things don't happen in Route, so nothing will happen and he will crack. This is what his very existence was created for, so it might take a while to refocus himself.
- Vanitas is like a bratty child who usually always got his way, and suddenly, he isn't getting his way anymore. While he won't stomp his feet, he will be prone to getting extra violent. Whether it's with his fists or whatever is handy (keep baseball bats away from this guy), beating on people makes him feel better.

Samples
(Please note that both samples must take place in Route_29’s setting.)

First Person Sample:

Ventus. You know you can't escape your fate, your destiny. If you want to let me give you an incentive... [There's a dark chuckle.] I can certainly do that.

Now come. We have some unfinished business to take care of. Unless you would like for me to start killing off your friends, one by one? I could even start with those disgusting little creatures you carry around.

Third Person Sample:

Pathetic.

It's the only word that came to mind as he glowered out the window into the snow. Tiny town, tiny buildings, tiny people. Worthless people. There was a tug in his chest that let him know he was here, but it seemed he was too far away for him to truly tell.

Vanitas didn't bother with the uniform left on the bed he woke in, nor did he bother with the red and white "pokeball" he had been issued. He doesn't need any of that; what he does need is to find Ventus, and to complete the X-blade. Before he could really catch himself, his mouth curled sourly into a frown, eyes narrowing and staring almost too intently on a person walking by outside.

The man, feeling a strange stare, glanced around before landing on the figure in the window. Almost instantly looking away, he scurried off with his neck hunched a bit, shivers running down his spine from the pure disgust on the strangers face.

He had lost. That's right. Tch... Well then, Ventus. We'll see who loses this time.

With that thought in mind, his eyes seemed to burn a little brighter, a little more terribly purely golden yellow, and a wicked smile stretched his face into two. Turning, he passed by the bed again and swept up the bag full of items, carelessly swatting the red and white ball aside as he dug into it. He isn't stupid enough to move out into the snow without a warmer attire, but there was no chance in him leaving his armor behind anywhere.

Quickly drawing on the scarf and jacket, he ditched the extra boots and ignored the letter inside, tossing it to the floor without a second thought. Once the essentials were duly noted, Vanitas lifted his helmet from the end of the bed and placed it on, adjusting the chin until it sat properly on his face. Slinging the bag onto his back then, he left without a single glance back, seemingly not seeing the black crow now perching itself on the windowsill. The Pokemon tipped its head, before recognizing that this was apparently its trainer, and hopped down to follow silently.
